How to move your Vox blog to TypePad

TypePad We've made it easy to move your Vox blog to a new home on TypePad. Our import wizard will step you through the process of registering for a TypePad account (or signing into your existing account if you already have one), picking a home for your new blog, and importing your content. If you're a new TypePad user, we'll automatically provision a "TypePad Basic" account for you, free of charge.

Here's how the import process works.

  1. Register or sign in to TypePad.  The import wizard will ask you to either register for a new TypePad account, or sign in to your existing TypePad account if you already have one.  All you'll need is an email address; if you're moving your Vox blog to TypePad we'll give you a free TypePad account.
  2. Provide your Vox username and password.  This will give the import wizard access to your Vox account, so that it can move your blog to TypePad.
  3. Pick a new home for your blog.  If you're new to TypePad, the import wizard will ask you to choose a new domain for your blog.  And if you're already a TypePad blogger, you'll be given the option of creating a new blog or importing posts into an existing blog.
  4. TypePad will import your posts.   TypePad will move over all posts and comments. Your private posts will stay private, and photos, audio and videos that you've embedded in Vox posts will also be imported.  There are a lot more details about how the importer works in the FAQ below.
  5. Tell your Vox neighbors about your new home. When the import process is done, you can have the wizard automatically post a message to your Vox blog so that all your neighbors will know your blog's new address.

And that's it!  The whole process only takes a few minutes, and your blog will be up and running on TypePad.

Frequently asked questions about moving your Vox blog to TypePad

Do I have to pay for my TypePad blog?

No. If you are importing your Vox blog into TypePad and you don't have a TypePad account, you'll register for a new account, and we'll provision a "TypePad Basic" account for you, free of charge. This account level includes one blog, access to hundreds of professionally designed blog themes, and most of the great features of TypePad.  If you would like to host multiple blogs under your account, and have access to advanced design tools to customize the look and feel of your blogs, you can upgrade to TypePad Plus, TypePad Unlimited or TypePad Premium.  Learn more about TypePad's account levels.

If you already blog on TypePad, we will give you the option of either importing your Vox blog into one of your existing TypePad blogs or to create a new blog under your existing account.  If you have a Plus level account and already have 4 blogs under that account, we will provision you a new blog free of charge.

I have private posts on Vox.  What happens to those?

We know that many of you used Vox to blog for your friends and family, and kept your posts private on the service.  We take your privacy seriously, and have made sure that when you move your blog to TypePad those posts are not exposed publicly unless you want them to be.

TypePad does not have the same privacy features as Vox; posts on TypePad are either "published" or set to "draft" status.  Additionally, you can password protect your entire TypePad blog, and share a common username and password with your friends and family.

  • Any private post on Vox will be imported as a "draft" TypePad post.  Vox posts that were  set to be viewable by "neighborhood only," "friends and family," "friends," "family," or "you (hidden)" will be imported into TypePad and set to draft status. This will ensure sure that your private posts and photos are migrated off of Vox, but are not exposed to the public.
  • Any public post on Vox that contains a private photo will be imported as a "draft" TypePad post.  Vox allowed you to insert a private photo or video into a public post.  To stay on the safe side and ensure that none of your private photos or videos are exposed, these posts will also be set to "draft" status within TypePad.

Once you have imported your Vox blog into TypePad, we encourage you to sign into your account and review the posts on TypePad's Post Listing screen. You can set a post from "draft" to "published" to make posts public.  The TypePad knowledge base has more information about how to manage posts in TypePad.

Will TypePad import all of my photos and videos?

The TypePad importer will move all of the photos and videos that are embedded within posts in your Vox blog.  Photos will automatically be moved into TypePad. The importer will do its best to format your posts and display your embedded images as well as possible.

TypePad will not import photos and videos that are not embedded in your Vox blog's posts. We have developed an export tool that will help you migrate your photos and videos on Vox to Flickr. Learn more about exporting to Flickr.

TypePad does not have a native video player; most TypePad bloggers rely on a dedicated third-party video service like YouTube or Vimeo.  If you have embedded YouTube videos in your Vox blog, those will display normally on your new TypePad blog.  If you uploaded your own video content to your Vox blog, those files will display as links on your TypePad blog.

What about other items in my Vox library?

If you have links to Amazon books, videos or music embedded in your posts in Vox, the importer will insert images of the cover art for those items into your posts.  The importer will do its best to format your posts and display that cover art as well as possible.  Those items will be automatically linked to Amazon from your TypePad blog.

If you have audio clips embedded in your posts in Vox, TypePad will import those and will insert those into TypePad's default audio player. Album artwork for uploaded audio clips will not be imported.

Will TypePad import comments on my posts?

Yes.  TypePad will import all of the comments on your posts.  Names on comments will be set to the display name of the user who commented on Vox. TypePad will not import (or display / link to) the email address of the Vox commenter.

How long will the import take?

It depends on the size of your Vox blog. Because we're moving all of your posts, comments, photos and videos into TypePad, it may take a little while if you've been a very active Vox member. You don't need to watch over the import process, however -- once you reach the page where you see the "progress bar" showing you how your import is going, you can close your browser and even leave your computer.  TypePad will continue to import your Vox blog even when you're not watching that page.  If you do close your browser, we recommend bookmarking that page and visiting it again to follow up on the progress of the import process.

Will you redirect my Vox blog to my new TypePad blog?

Yes.  When Vox closes on September 30, 2010 we will automatically redirect any requests to your Vox blog to the home page of your new TypePad blog.

I use Vox as my OpenID provider, will you delegate to TypePad?

Vox will continue to provide OpenID support through September 30.  After September 30, if you migrate your blog to TypePad, OpenID requests to your Vox blog will delegate authentication to TypePad.

Note, however, that OpenID supports only one level of delegation.  So if you were previously delegating your personal domain's address to Vox for authentication, we recommend delegating your personal domain to another provider.
