How to move your Vox photos and videos to Flickr

FlickrFlickr, the popular service from Yahoo!, is great for organizing, editing and sharing photos and videos with friends, family and the world. For Vox members that want to move all of their photos and videos to a new home, we've developed an export tool that will move your Vox photos and videos to Flickr.

Flickr and Vox have similar privacy features, so when you export your Vox photos and videos to Flickr, Vox will set the privacy settings on your photos to match your settings on Vox.

If you don't already have a Flickr account, you'll need one before starting the export process.  You can visit flickr.com to get started.  Here's how the export process works.

  1. Sign in to Vox.  The home page of Vox has information about how you can export your photos to Flickr.
  2. Connect your Vox account to Flickr.  To export your photos to Flickr, we'll need to connect your Vox account to your Flickr account. Vox will pop open a new window and ask you to sign in to your Flickr account, and Flickr will ask you to grant Vox permission to access your Flickr account.  It sounds complicated, but it's all very easy, just follow the prompts.
  3. Export your Vox photos and videos to Flickr.  Once your accounts are connected you'll be prompted to export your photos.  Vox will send your photos to Flickr, back date them to the date they were uploaded to Vox, and assign appropriate privacy restrictions on the photos and videos in Flickr.

And that's it!  The whole process takes just a few minutes, and your photos and videos will be transferred to your Flickr account.

Frequently asked questions about exporting your photos and videos to Flickr

Will Vox export all of my photos and videos to Flickr?

Vox will transfer all of your photos and videos to Flickr from your library, as long as you don't exceed your Flickr account limits.  Vox's export tool will show you information about your Flickr account, and advise you whether your export will be within your Flickr account limits.  Learn more about Flickr's account levels and upload limits.

If you have more photos or videos than are allowed in your current Flickr account limits, you should either (a) upgrade your Flickr account or (b) visit your Vox Library at vox.com/organize and delete the appropriate number of photos / videos to meet the limits of your current Flickr account.

Some of my photos are private. How do Vox's privacy settings map to Flickr's privacy settings?

When you export your photos to Flickr, Vox will maintain the privacy levels of your photos, and map them to your Flickr friends and family accordingly.

  • Items visible to anyone on Vox will be visible to anyone on Flickr
  • Items visible to your friends on Vox will be visible to your friends on Flickr
  • Items visible to your family on Vox will be visible to your family on Flickr
  • Items visible to your friends and family on Vox will be visible to your friends and family on Flickr
  • Items visible to your neighborhood on Vox will be visible to your friends and family on Flickr
  • Items visible to only you on Vox will be visible to only you on Flickr

Do you export the full size of the photo on Vox to Flickr?

Yes. Vox will export the original size of the photo that you uploaded to Vox.

Do you export the full video on Vox to Flickr?

Yes. Vox will export the full video to Flickr.  However, Flickr will only play the first 90 seconds of the video.

What video formats are supported by Flickr and the export tool?

Only videos that you uploaded directly to Vox will be exported to Flickr.  (Videos embedded from YouTube will not be exported to Flickr, since they are still available on YouTube.)  Flickr supports a wide variety of video codecs, including AVI, WMV, MOV, MPEG (1, 2 and 4), 3gp and M2TS.  Flickr does not support FLV, so any FLV movies in your Vox library will not be exported.  And some proprietary codecs may not be supported on Flickr. Learn more about Flickr's video support.

Vox supported importing photos from Flickr. Will those be exported back to Flickr?

No. Vox assumes that you already have copies of those photos in your Flickr account. To avoid creating duplicate photos in Flickr Vox will not export those photos back to Flickr.

Will Vox export comments on my photos or videos to Flickr?

No. While both Vox and Flickr allow signed-in users to comment on photos and videos, we are not able to export comments on photos. (It would be extremely difficult for us to reliably map a signed-in Vox user to a user on Flickr, and if we could there are logical and reasonable restrictions in the Flickr API that make it impossible for an application to create comments on behalf of a different user.)

What happens if my export fails?

If the export fails for any reason, you’ll get an error message on the page and instructions for next steps. If you restart the export, it restarts from the beginning, so you should probably remove any photos or videos from the first export on Flickr before trying again.

Do I need to remain on the site during the export process?

No, you don't need to stay on the page during the export. If you return to the page and the progress bar hasn't moved in hours, just hit the "restart export button" to try again.
